Councils have received government payments of up to £4m for the first year of the New Homes Bonus Scheme.

The scheme was set up to encourage local councils to allow new homes to be built in their areas.

This is a big boost for those on Plumbing courses and other associated courses as the encouragement by the government to create new homes increases the demand for qualified plumbers and construction Workers.

Local Councils which received the highest funding included:

  • Tower Hamlets received £4.29m after 2,934 homes were built in its area.
  • Islington council received £3.7m
  • Birmingham received £3.2m
  • Leeds received £2.7m

Scarborough council received the smallest bonus, after just 25 homes were built.

In total, the government intends to spend £200m on the incentive this year and has allocated a total of £950m to spend over the spending review period to 2014. Meaning the demand for people on plumbing courses is set to increase as more jobs in these sectors will become available.

Housing minister Grant Shapps said: “This country needs more homes, so we need the nation to start building again – but this time with the backing of local communities rather than in the teeth of their opposition. That’s why we’re giving communities a reason to say yes to new homes through these powerful cash incentives.

If you want to improve your job prospects by undertaking plumbing courses or learning a new trade RF Training offer a selection of plumbing courses which you can take.
