Will the New Welsh Building Regulations Benefit Plumbing Training throughout the UK?

The new changes in Welsh building legislation are set to bring in more work for plumbers throughout Wales; this is promising news for those undertaking plumbing training as this may spread throughout the UK if the legislation proves successful there.

The new Building regulation will now require all newly-built residential properties such as houses, blocks of flats, care homes and university halls of residence, will now require fire sprinklers systems to be installed in order to pass safety regulations. This is a landmark for health and safety regulations with Wales being the first country to require sprinklers for new build residential properties.

The law, which received unanimous support from the Welsh assembly and from three fire and rescue services, has now been put into place as a requirement for all new properties built in Wales.

Those considering plumbing training throughout the UK may also see this as good news as it will expand the number of jobs that qualified plumbers can take on especially if it proves to be successful and is adopted outside of Wales.

Blane Judd at the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) said “Plumbers will be in the best position to address these issues and find a way of ensuring that the new sprinklers are effective, no matter what the type of property and location,”

He also added that “Even though it’s not a legal requirement in England or Scotland, there’s no reason why plumbers who have completed relevant plumbing training can’t offer sprinklers for new and older properties for additional safety.”

If this process proves to be a success in Wales it may be adopted throughout the UK as an essential requirement for all new homes.

There is however speculation of the new legislation causing problems with the National House Building Council querying whether the process will be cost effective and whether existing water pressures would enable the sprinklers to work in many homes.

These concerns have not been mirrored elsewhere but as the law is put into practice this may highlight other concerns that people may have.
