DIY Plumbing Tips

For homeowners, knowing how to take care of small problems that arise within their homes can result in big money savings. From landscaping to plumbing, being able to conduct simple repairs and services themselves saves the hassle and expense of calling someone else out. These simple DIY plumbing tips should allow you to take care of small problems yourself.

Unclogging Drains

One of the most common issues in the home is a clogged drain, particularly the toilet. By using a plunger or drain snake, you should be able to take care of the issue yourself. Try using a plunger and if this doesn’t work, a drain snake can be inserted into the toilet bowl and be used to pull the clog out of the bowl.

Un-clogging A Sink Drain

The drain of a sink can also become clogged. Simply use a drain plug adjustment aim to pop up the debris and get your sink back in action.

Shower Water Pressure Issues

Limescale buildup is a common issue with shower water pressure. To treat this problem, you will need to unscrew the shower head and then the spray plate. Put the head in de-scaling solution to remove the buildup and reassemble to have things working as normal again.

Slow Kitchen Water Flow

Sometimes the kitchen faucet can begin to flow slowly. The aerator can become dirty and be the cause of the issue. The aerator is the mesh piece located in the faucet top. By cleaning this area, you will increase the pressure of kitchen sink.

Retrieving lost items

Many times, homeowners lose small items down the sink drain. And sometimes, it’s the children that are to blame. You can remove these items by learning basics of plumbing. Firstly, you will need to turn the water off. Placing a bucket below the pipes of the sink, twist the bottom section to remove the pipe sections. The item should fall out with ease, allowing you to put everything back together and have working pipes again.

Know the Shut off Valve Location

Every homeowner needs to know where the shut off valve is located for the water supply. This is extremely important. If a disaster occurs such as a major leak in the home, you need to be able to shut off this area without delay.

Remember…

It’s important to remember that while these DIY plumbing tips are simple things anyone could do, serious plumbing problems should be left to the professionals. Attempts at undertaking serious work without being trained could result in further damage and therefore more of an expense to fix.
