From Retail To Optech Electrical | Electrical Trainee

Electrical trainee Greg wanted a career change, so he moved into the trades industry.

It’s never too later to change your career, and Options Skills electrical trainee, Greg, is the perfect example of that.

After 13 years working in the retail sector, Greg wanted something new and began looking into the trades industry to provide him with a stable yet exciting career.

Greg knew the basics of both electrics and plumbing. However, after speaking with one of our course advisors, he wanted to focus his efforts on becoming an electrician.

Already employed elsewhere, Greg needed the flexibility to complete his training. At Options Skills, we’re more than happy to accommodate where possible, as we strive to make sure training works for everyone.

After enquiring with us in March 2020, Greg began his NVQ Level 3 Electrical Training Course at our Manchester centre in August that same year.

Electrical Training With Options Skills

During our NVQ Level 3 Training Course, students gain the knowledge and skills needed to pass the initial stage of training.

Keeping class sizes small, qualified and experienced trainers deliver our courses through theoretical and practical training.

By the end of the initial training stage, Greg had earned his DEI, 18th Edition Wiring Regulations and ECS Trainee Card.

Students must then seek paid work as electrical trainees with this card as per the training course requirements.

To help our students find employment, we offer an employability workshop and assistance from our career development team.

Students are introduced to the hidden job market during our employability workshop and provided with CV writing and interview technique tips.

With a newly updated CV, students can enlist the help of our career development team to help them find job opportunities.

The team work hard to place students into roles at electrical companies suited to them.

By February 2021, Greg had secured a role with Optech Electrical and began working with them the following month.

What Did Greg Think?

“Fantastic!!! I did my 5 weeks electrical training in Manchester.

Great, professional, extremely experienced instructors. Big shout out to Terry and Paul. Spend 3 months to get all my theory out of way before changing career.

When I was ready I have contacted Options-Skills employment support. Incredible James T. helped to secure job within 2 weeks!!!

Simply amazing end to end help and support. Thank you.

What’s next?

While working with Optech Electrical Solutions, Greg will build his NVQ portfolio and be assessed on-site by an NVQ assessor.

Once complete and with assessments passed, Greg will earn his NVQ Level 3. Following this, he’ll be able to complete his AM2 assessment and apply for his ECS Gold Card.

With the gold card, Greg will earn installation electrician status and be qualified to work unsupervised on installation, commissioning and maintenance of low voltage electrical and electronic equipment and appliances in a consumer’s electrical installation. (Source: ECS)
