From The Entertainment Industry To Electrics | Electrical Trainee

Electrical trainee measuring grey wiring with a measuring tape

Joe became an electrical trainee to expand his skillset and increase his earning potential.

Though many of the students at Options Skills are looking for a complete career change, others train to expand their skillset within their current role. For example, we’ve had plumbers add gas engineering to their CV and scaffolders add electrics.

Gaining new qualifications, skills, and experience are great for broadening the variety of projects you can take on, making your days at work more interesting. And, on top of that, new skills and expertise more often than not come with a pay rise.

And that’s precisely what was Joe was looking to do. He wanted to take the expertise he’d gained working in the entertainment lighting industry and build on it.

As a result, Joe contacted us with interest in our NVQ Level 3 Electrical Training Course. Joe spoke with our course advisors to gain a more in-depth understanding of what the course entails and then travelled to Options Skills Purley for a centre visit.

Our centre visits are an excellent opportunity for those looking to train with us. They allow people to look around, see the facilities for themselves and ask our training team and advisors any questions they may have.

And, with all his questions answered and his mind made up, Joe put down a deposit to secure his place on the course.

Electrical Training With Options Skills

We prefer to keep class sizes small, so as part of a group of ten, Joe began his training course in October 2019.

Throughout the first stage of our electrical training, students learn a combination of theoretical learning and practical skills, ensuring they have a well-rounded understanding of the electrical trade. Our experienced trainers deliver the courses and are always on hand to provide extra support and training where needed.

Joe earned his DEI and 18th Edition Wiring Regulations upon completing the first stage.

As per the course requirements, Joe then had to work as a paid trainee to build his NVQ portfolio. While some students already have connections in the electrical industry to assist them in finding work, many don’t. This is where we can help.

During training, we deliver our employability workshop. The workshop provides CV, cover letter and job hunting tips. Along with that, students can utilise our career development team to assist them in finding work.

With the team’s help, Joe successfully secured employment with BMI Electrical Solutions. Starting work in November 2020, he’s been working there ever since.

What Did Joe Think?

“I did my 8 week intensive course at Options Skills Purley and found it to be a great course.

I started with a very basic knowledge of electrical installation and now feel extremely confident in my knowledge and ability.

Stuart was a great instructor, very knowledgeable and engaging, a great teacher. I was most impressed with their continued support after the course.

Wanna give a specific shout out to Josh who has helped me find a placement and has continued to check up on me and make sure everything is fine! Thank you!! Highly recommend, 5 stars!”

What’s next?

With his employment well underway, Joe will continue to work with BMI Electrical Solutions to build his portfolio. As well as portfolio building, while on-site, an NVQ assessor will also visit to ensure he’s on the right track.

When Joe has completed his portfolio, he will be eligible to take his AM2 assessment. Undertaken as an independent centre, trainees must pass practical demonstrations and a knowledge assessment. Once electrical trainees have passed this, they can apply for their ECS Gold Card, which grants them installation electrician status upon gaining.
