At Options Skills, we’re always looking for ways to improve the training we deliver to students and their overall experience. From updating course plans to creating new resources, we consistently update, upgrade and improve where possible. And our latest project was the refurbishment of one of our gas workshops in Birmingham.
Unit 107 is home to a classroom where our ACS Domestic Gas students undertake theoretical learning and a workshop area for practical training. While the workshop already had everything students needed, we felt it was time to refresh.
Step One: Demolition
Before even thinking about installing anything new, we needed to clear the workshop space.
We had a haul of tools and equipment that needed rehoming for the time being. In addition, we had to demolish breeze block walls and carefully uninstall appliances.
The team demolished the bay separators, removed pipework from the walls and tore down chimneys.
Though it was a time-consuming part of the refurbishment, it was satisfying to see the blank canvas ready to be upgraded.
Step Two: Rebuilding
Now it was time to start the rebuilding part of the refurbishment.
Our trainers began by constructing wooden frames and attaching panelling to create new walls on which they would install the new boilers and meters.
We knew we wanted each student to have a dedicated space to work, so we constructed frames to create separate bays.
Ahead of attaching panelling, our gas trainers installed the pipework to allow the panels to fit neatly around the piping, resulting in a clean, finished look.
Step Three: Installation
Next was the task of reinstalling all the previously taken-down gas and plumbing appliances and installing new pieces.
Each bay along the left-hand side of the room boasts a boiler, gas meter and radiator. To arm our students with more knowledge and experience, we installed a range of boiler brands to work on, including; Potterton/Baxi, Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, and Warmhaus.
On the opposite side of the workshop are bays fitted with gas cookers and meters within cabinets to mimic a kitchen.
Finally, at the far end, we have two gas fires. Although gas fires are less common these days, plenty still need servicing, so it remains an essential part of training.
Step Four: Refurbishment Finishing Touches
With all the frames built and the appliances in place, it was time for the finishing touches.
We gave the walls and bays a fresh coat of paint to brighten the room. Each bay has a set of tools, including screwdrivers and spanners hanging by the boiler, making it easy for trainees to find what they need. We’ve also got the boiler manual sitting close by for students to refer to while working.

Over a month, we completely stripped back and rebuilt our gas workshop, and we couldn’t be happier with the results.
