After two years in his previous role, Andre decided he was better suited to a trades career.
People change their career paths for a whole host of reasons. It can be financial incentives, and it’s just time for something new for others. Whatever the reason for looking for a new career, it’s never too late to learn a trade.
Andre worked in a factory for two years before enquiring with Options Skills about our course. Wanting to learn a new skill and take on a new challenge, Andre had his eyes set on the electrical industry.
After speaking to our advisors, Andre booked a centre visit for our Birmingham facilities.
A centre visit is an excellent opportunity to look around where you’ll be training and offer you a chance to speak to our trainers and have any questions answered.
Having completed his aptitude test, Andre booked his place on our NVQ Level 3 Electrical Training Course to begin in October 2020.
Electrical Training With Options Skills
Andre’s training began with centre-based learning for two months. As an electrical trainee, he completed various theoretical and practical training covering everything from health & safety to wiring installations during this time.
Regular assessments occur throughout this phase to ensure students are on the right track and progressing as expected.
Students will have gained their DEI and 18th Edition Wiring Regulations upon completing stage one.
To proceed to the next stage, students require an ECS Trainee Card. With this card, they’re able to go out to find paid work, during which they’ll build their NVQ portfolio.
To assist students in finding employment, we offer a free employability workshop. The workshop covers CV creation, discovering the hidden job market and interview techniques.
We have also recently launched our career development team—the teamwork to build relationships with local businesses and ultimately find placements for our student.
Andre completed our employability workshop and utilised our career development team.
Upon finishing stage one, we were able to find him a job with GLJ Contracts beginning in January 2021.

What’s next?
Continuing work with GLJ Contracts, Andre will build his portfolio of work. While on-site, an NVQ assessor will assess his work and understanding.
Upon completing his portfolio, he will have gained his NVQ Level 3. With this, he will undertake an AM2 assessment at an independent centre. After this, he can apply for his ECS Gold Card.
The Gold Card awards workers installation electrician status, proving they can work unsupervised on installing, commissioning, and maintaining low voltage electrical and electronic equipment and appliances in a consumer’s electrical installation. (Source: ECS)
