Everyone is talking about going green and renewable energy – from supermarkets and clothing brands to energy companies and the government.
There’s no getting away from the fact that we need to act now to decarbonise the UK, but how we’re going to do that is where things get a bit confusing.
Rumours have spread, and misinformation has been shared, so what are the facts and what’s just fiction?
The UK Will Ban Gas Boilers By 2023
Fiction. Gas boilers will be banned but in new builds only. In 2019, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, announced that the UK would ban gas and oil boilers from domestic new build properties from 2025 onwards. (Source: Future Homes Standard)
In 2020, the government brought these plans forward to 2023 but have since reverted to the original target date of 2025.
Electric Is More Expensive Than Gas
Fact, for now. Electric is currently up to four times more expensive than gas. So, it’s no surprise that people aren’t keen on switching from gas boilers to electric ones.
However, as more people opt for electrical energy and technology improves, the price will decrease.
There’s No Point If Other Countries Don’t Go Green As Well
Fiction. Climate change is a global problem, and we must all do what we can to fight it.
But as not all countries are equipped to go green, those who can, though, must take responsibility.
Renewable Energy Can’t Power The Whole World
Fact. At the moment, that’s true. Renewable energy can’t meet the world’s energy requirements, but it will one day.
Technology is ever-evolving and improving, and it’s estimated that in 30 years, many countries will be 100% reliant on renewables. (Source: Inspired Clean Energy)
Going Green Is Too Expensive
Fiction. There’s no denying that some greener options aren’t affordable for everyone. For example, heat pumps and solar panels aren’t exactly budget-friendly, but there are other options. Electric boilers, for instance, cost around the same amount as gas boilers.
No one is expecting anyone to replace a gas boiler that’s in perfect working order, but consider going green with electric heating when the time comes. Plus, most alternatives will save you money in the long run!
No Single Option Will Work Across The Board
Fact. Industry experts, engineers and the public alike agree that we will use a combination of gas alternatives to heat our homes.
Every home will have different requirements, so one single alternative wouldn’t be suitable – which is why the industry and government must provide a range of options.
Decarbonisation Will Result In Job Losses
Fiction. Decarbonisation won’t reduce jobs, but we will see a change, as many workers upskill and use their skills and knowledge in alternative energy industries.
In reality, decarbonisation will likely result in more job opportunities globally, thanks to the ongoing development within the heating industry.
One Person Won’t Make A Difference
Fiction. Even if you don’t think you’re making a difference, you are. So while one person switching to solar heating might not make a dent, it will encourage other people to go greener.
And as more people do, the rate of climate change and the price of green energy options should decrease.
