Vocational training Trainees from all over the world came to London last month to compete in the World Skills games with the UK winning a number of medals. Also dubbed the “Skills Olympics” the 41st World Skills event took place at London’s ExCel Centre to an audience of over 138,000 people.
The Competitors, all trainees on vocational courses under the age of 25, took part in events in their chosen field, from plumbing and heating to chocolate making, to be awarded gold silver and bronze medals as world class competitors.
Team UK won a number of medals including; 5 Gold, 2 Silver and 6 bronze medals, placing the UK 5th in the world for skills training. The event has received support from training providers, industry bodies and the government for being inspirational to young people in the UK.
The event has also highlighted the importance of vocational training in the future as Skills Minister John Hayes has highlighted:
“Skills matter because Britain’s future chance to prosper is as a high-skills nation. If you want to create a sustainable economy, you need to change the workforce. These inspirational results are a tribute to the skill, imagination and purposeful pride of our young people.”
It appears that the government sees vocational training as the way forward for many people in the UK. Why?
