Part P is a phrase often cited when it comes to the discussion of electrical work, but what does it actually entail?
Introduced by the Government in 2005, Part P of the Building Regulations is an electrical safety legislation intended to increase safety for homeowners. Applying to England and Wales, the legislation brought electrical work under statutory control alongside other building work such as gas installations. The aim is to reduce the scale of faulty electrical.
As a result of Part P, the law requires an electrician registered with a Government-approved safety scheme to carry out most types of electrical work in your home. Upon completion of the work, the registered installer will issue you with electrical safety and compliance certificates. This is to confirm that you used the correct channels and did not attempt the work yourself.
If you choose not to follow Part P, you will have no certificates to prove the safety and compliance of the work carried out. When it comes to selling a property, there may be an issue with not being able to produce such paperwork. Additionally, you could be fined up to £5,000 for carrying out work that does not comply with building regulations.
