Electrical NVQ Level 3 - Course Contents

(Stage 1) Centre-Led Training

During the first two weeks of the Electrical NVQ Level 3, we will introduce you to the basics of electrics and domestic installations, with training split between classroom theory and practical lessons.

In the second week, you install and test a complete domestic installation, including a consumer unit, cooker circuit, lighting, and other circuits you would expect to find in a domestic situation.

The following four weeks focus on NVQ Knowledge units, starting with a health and safety unit through classroom theory and an online exam. Upon successfully passing the health & safety unit, we begin applications for ECS Trainee Cards. During these weeks, you work towards a practical unit that includes learning to bend conduits, cut and prepare trunking, terminate different types of cables, and completing your 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.

(Stage 2) On-site Experience & Portfolio Building

The second stage of NVQ Level 3 Electrical Training is portfolio building. With your ECS Trainee Card, and with the help of our in-house recruitment department, you can undertake paid employment as part of your portfolio-building stage of training.

While on-site, you will collect evidence towards your NVQ Performance Units. These must be completed in your own time and returned to the centre for assessments. You will have access to an Online Virtual Learning Environment, while your on-site assessors will help you complete these tasks.

(Stage 3) AM2 Assessment

On completion or near completion of your portfolio, you can apply for your AM2 (Achievement Measurement Test). The AM2 is an independent assessment of your skills and knowledge that all trainees must undertake. Once all three steps are complete, you can apply to JIB for your ECS Gold Card, gaining installation electrician status.

NET does not share the specifics of each exam. However, a brief outline of each module is available. Candidates must undertake tasks in equipped booths within a specified time restriction. These will include installation, inspection and testing and fault finding. Work must be completed in line with health & safety best practices and comply with the current IEE Wiring Regulation.

Why Train As An Electrician?

The UK electrical contractors market is worth around £18.2bn a year (source: AMA Research). However, it is highly fragmented and comprised mainly of independent contractors and sole traders. The industry is characterised by poor service and unreliability. Consumers are wary of who they appoint and often find it challenging to find trustworthy tradespeople. But when they do, they use them repeatedly and recommend them to other people.

The size and maturity of the sector, combined with the failure of the general competition to meet customer expectations, represent a real opportunity to profit from a professional and customer-focused local service.

A shortage of skilled workers and an increase in new housing means that electricians are in high demand. Those currently in the trade are earning far beyond the average UK salary, averaging around £30,784 (source: Office of National Statistics)
