(Stage 1) Practical & Theory Centre-Led Training
Known as a Managed Learning Program (MLP), stage one of our full-time ACS Gas Training Course is delivered in small groups at one of the Options Skills training centres.
You will be taught a mixture of theoretical information and practical skills, ranging from health & safety to gas cooker, fire and boiler installations, appliance servicing, testing and fault finding. Also covered in the first stage is Hot Water Storage Systems (G3), including unvented systems.
The full-time ACS gas course is designed to be an in-depth introduction to gas work and installation, preparing you to move on to developing your on-site experience as quickly as possible. We also have a part-time route available for those looking for a more flexible approach to trianing.
(Stage 2) On-site Experience & Portfolio Building
Stage two of training is a legal requirement for anyone training to become a gas engineer. During this time, you will work on-site under the supervision of a qualified gas engineer, undertaking a range of gas work and documenting this to complete a portfolio.
Your portfolio acts as evidence of the work you have undertaken as a trainee and must be of acceptable quality to allow you to progress to the next stage of training.
We will arrange your local placement with a Registered Gas Engineer through our dedicated recruitment team if necessary.

(Stage 3) ACS Assessment & Gas Safe Registration
In the final stage of our gas training course, you will be invited back to the training centre to undertake your ACS Initial Assessment.
As the industry-recognised route for gas operatives, the Accredited Certification Scheme is required to gain the certificate of competence required to become a member of the Gas Safe Register.
Once you have successfully passed your ACS Gas Assessment, you can apply to become a member of the Gas Safe Register. Alternatively, you may work as an approved operative for a Gas Safe Registered business. Gas Safe Membership is renewable annually, and fees are payable directly to the Gas Safe Register

(Optional Stage 4) Heat Pump & Renewables Training
Our renewables training, available as an optional stage four of our domestic gas training or as a standalone course for existing gas engineers, is designed to equip you with a comprehensive set of renewables accreditations.
Advancing your career in the gas industry by embracing renewable energy offers a unique opportunity to stay relevant and future-proof your professional journey.
Get ready to dive into the future of energy with expert training in Energy Efficiency, Air-Source Heat Pumps, Ground-Source Heat Pumps, and Low-Temperature Hot Water Systems.

With Effect from November 2017, all New Entrants to the Gas Industry in the UK must follow a standardised Level 3 RQF (Regulated Qualifications Framework) Gas Course delivered by an approved Gas Training Centre. The Managed Learning Programme (MLP) delivered by Options Skills meets the requirements of the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM) document Standards of Training in Gas Work IGEM/IG1 leading to: The acquisition of initial Nationally Accredited Certification Scheme for Gas Fitting Operatives (ACS) certificate(s) of Gas Safety Competence. The acquisition of a Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland or Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) gas utilisation certificate. The issue of a Training Completion Certificate (TCC). From August 2022, the requirements of MLP have further changed following an audit by IGEM. These changes ensure all training centres meet the national standards for gas training. Options Skills MLP exceeds these standards and has been further enhanced to provide the best training available to ensure all new entrants to the industry exceed the minimum requirements. Training centres are now required to offer a minimum centre-led training of 266 guided learning hours. Companies are no longer permitted to offer courses shorter than this duration, as these are deemed inadequate. (source IGEM). Please see below for the abbreviated Gas Course Syllabus: |

Why Take Our Essential ACS Gas Training?
Millions across the UK use gas central heating systems to heat their homes. However, with a declining workforce and an increasing housing market, the demand for installing, servicing, maintaining and repairing gas appliances is higher than ever.
New engineers are needed to help meet this demand. To meet this demand there is a need for more engineers trained to cater to the needs of domestic heating systems. This is where our ACS gas certification can help. This course is the first step in your training and opens the door to not only gas and heating but renewable energy (such as heat pumps) too.
Training to become a gas engineer covers a range of skills and knowledge, including gas appliance maintenance and installation, pipework and essential theory. By becoming a gas engineer, you’ll be qualified to work on domestic properties. With 24.8 million households in the UK (as of 2021), this presents you with a litany of prospective customers as well as the potential to turn your career into a business.
On top of this is the growing green energy marketing, which adds demand to existing heating engineers. So, as homeowners look to replace their existing heating system with low-temperature options such as heat pumps, gas engineers are upskilling in renewable energies.
The optional fourth step of our domestic gas training offers gas engineers the chance to take advantage of this opportunity by earning a wide range of renewable energy accreditations.
The Managed Learning Programme (MLP) delivered by Options Skills meets the requirements of the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM) document Standards of Training in Gas Work IGEM/IG1 leading to:
- The acquisition of the initial Nationally Accredited Certification Scheme for Gas Fitting Operatives (ACS) certificate(s) of Gas Safety Competence.
- The acquisition of a Framework of Regulated Qualifications (RQF) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland or Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) gas utilisation certificate.
- The issue of a Training Completion Certificate (TCC).
