Our three-week essential domestic plumber training is ideal if you’re looking to learn the essential skills and knowledge of domestic plumbing & bathroom installation, maintenance and repair.

No experience is required to enrol, as this comprehensive training programme will introduce you to the plumbing trade. In addition, it will equip you with a solid understanding and teach you how to deal with common plumbing issues and jobs that arise in a domestic setting.

Throughout the 15-day course, you’ll be working in our fully-equipped workshops to learn the fundamental skills of the plumbing industry.

The course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to launch a career in plumbing, carrying out domestic plumbing work, from essential health & safety to bathroom installation and everything in between. Upon completion, you will be in a great position to begin working in the plumbing industry and look to increase your skill set by moving into the gas and heating industry.

WEEK ONE

Introduction
To Plumbing

During week one, you will learn essential health & safety regulations and techniques, cutting, bending, soldering and jointing of copper piping and the cutting and jointing of push-fit plastic fittings.

WEEK TWO

Domestic
Plumbing & Heating

In week two, training will focus on cold and hot water systems, domestic waste pipework systems, essential domestic plumbing repairs and replacements, and central heating systems. 

WEEK THREE

Bathroom &
Radiator Installation

Throughout week three of your plumbing course, you will plan, measure, design and install a complete bathroom suite and radiator, focusing on water regulations and building regulations.

ESSENTIAL DOMESTIC PLUMBER TRAINING SYLLABUS

MONDAY
  • Importance of personal protective equipment.
  • COSHH Regulations.
  • Risk Assessment.
  • Safe use of hand tools.
  • Safe use of electrical power tools.
  • Use of propane blow torch and basic fire protection measures.
  • Protection of domestic premises.
  • Practical jointing copper tubes.
  • Cutting and jointing 15mm and 22mm copper tubes.
  • Soldering common domestic plumbing fittings.
  • Compression type fixings for common domestic plumbing fittings.
TUESDAY
  • Safe manual handling techniques.
  • Safe working at heights including step ladder, extension ladder, assemble, use and decommission of mobile tower scaffold.
  • Jointing Copper tubes.
WEDNESDAY
  • Fabrication and pipe bending of 15mm and 22mm. copper tube, to include: Right-angle bends, offsets, full and partial passovers.
THURSDAY
  • Completion of set copper frames and bench tasks combining skills learnt.
FRIDAY
  • Cutting and jointing of 15mm and 22mm push-fit type plastic fittings commonly used in domestic plumbing systems. Review of practical sessions and review of the week.

MONDAY
  • Understanding basic domestic plumbing systems Cold water and hot water systems, cold water entry into the property.
  • Typical hot and cold water systems and pipe runs and pipe identification and position of control valves.
  • Use of control valves in an emergency situation, internal and external.
  • Procedure to cap off and make safe both hot and cold water systems.
  • Identification of various taps used for domestic hot and cold water systems.
  • How taps work and how to replace and repair to include:
  • Stop Cock.
  • Hose Union Bib Tap (Garden tap)
  • Washing Machine Taps.
  • Kitchen Sink Pillar Taps.
  • Bath Taps/Combined Shower and Bath Taps.
  • Wash Hand Basin Taps.
TUESDAY
  • Understanding domestic waste pipework systems.
  • Various types of waste pipe sizes and where they would be used.
  • Connections to soil and waste pipework.
  • Identification of traps for kitchen sink, wash hand basin, bath, and washing machine/dishwasher.
  • Common faults and repair and unblocking waste pipe work and traps.
  • Cutting and jointing waste pipe work using the push-fit and glue method.
  • Cutting and jointing 110mm soil and vent pipe.
  • Jointing and repairing rainwater guttering systems.
WEDNESDAY
  • Fabrication and pipe bending of 15mm and 22mm copper tube, to include:
  • Right-angle bends
  • Offsets
  • Full and partial passovers
THURSDAY
  • Understanding basic domestic central heating systems and pipework.
  • Identify flow and return pipework from the boiler to the radiator.
  • Identify central heating radiator valves and operation.
  • Identify Combination boiler systems.
  • Identify Unvented hot water and heating systems.
  • Understand work that can and cannot be carried out on heating systems.
  • Understand procedures to ensure heating systems are made safe in the event of a leak or emergency.
  • Make up the radiator with valves, hang the radiator, and connect it to the radiator valves.
FRIDAY
  • Fixings to different wall finishes.
  • Lifting floorboards (non-electric tools).
  • Practical catch-up session.
  • Review of course

  • Understanding the principles involved in designing and installing a domestic bathroom suite.
  • Types of suites and sanitaryware, including shower trays and showers.
  • Understanding of Water Regulations and Building Regulations.
  • Bathroom installation preparation.
  • Collate measurements and create a materials list.
TUESDAY
  • Installation of bathroom suite and radiator
WEDNESDAY
  • Installation of bathroom suite and radiator
THURSDAY
  • Practical catch-up
FRIDAY
  • Course Review

Although this course is intense and you will find yourself picking up a lot of information in a short space of time, Options Skills are the best way to get into the trades if you are a fast learner and are willing to work hard. The trainers are excellent (John, Steve, Thomas) and they will help you wherever they can, however be prepared to put in the work yourself in the evenings and weekends to revise and pass exams. Josh and James from the recruitment team were a joy to work with, they work tirelessly to find us all placements to start working in the industry while you complete the portfolio part of the course. I just finished the Electrical 6 week course and the lads found me a job in Birmingham city centre. With a number of exams left to do and portfolio to complete after you finish the 6 weeks in-centre, you can expect the total time to reach being qualified to be around 1-2 years.

Really recommend this training centre. Just finished a 6 week electrical installation course. Tutors Colin and John were great, they were knowledgeable professional and very supportive throughout. Great service from start to finish. Course is very well run & enjoyable. Prepares you for the world of electrics, with constant support from trainers Colin or John when needed. After the course is finished Josh and his team work around the clock to help you get a foot in the door at an electrical company. DOMESTIC PLUMBER TRAINING FAQs

Frequently asked questions about our domestic plumber training course.

No previous experience is required to enrol on our plumbing course. So, whether you’re just leaving formal education or looking for a career change, you can train with us.
