We deliver a range of renewable energy training courses designed to assist engineers in upskilling and future-proofing their careers.
The heating industry is changing in the UK as we move towards reducing our carbon emissions and reaching net-zero by 2050. A significant part of this will be switching to more sustainable heating options. To meet the targets set by the government, gas engineers are being called upon to upskill in the renewable energy sector.
We’re proud to be at the forefront of renewable energy training, delivering various courses to ensure engineers are well-equipped for the developments in the industry and secure in their careers.
Upskill in the renewable heating industry and future-proof your career.
Upskill and learn how to install and maintain air-source and ground-source heat pumps.
Demonstrate understanding and ability to install, service, and maintain domestic hot water systems.
Understand and gain competence to design heating systems in accordance with Part L.
WRAS certification is required to join a’ Water Industry Approved Plumber Scheme.
Learn to design, specify, install and maintain low-temperature heating systems.
Learn the fundamental skills of gas engineering and go out to work on-site with a qualified mentor before exploring your renewables training options
When you enrol on our ACS Domestic Gas & Plumbing Maintenance Training Course, you’ll be eligible to apply for twelve months of free Checkatrade membership.
Checkatrade is the leading tradesperson directory, with over 13 million people using them to help find a reputable tradesperson.
Allowing you to reach new customers in your local area and further afield, Checkatrade and Options Skills will help you launch your career and grow your business.
With over 23 million gas boilers still in use across the UK (Source: The Conversation), the demand for gas engineers is still very much there, meaning as a heating & renewables engineer, you may still find a large portion of your work revolves around natural gas heating – at least for the time being.
You’ll install, maintain and repair a range of domestic heating appliances such as boilers, fires and ovens. You may also undertake plumbing work such as bathroom and kitchen installation.
As the industry develops and more people adopt eco-friendly, sustainable heating systems, you’ll find yourself undertaking more renewable energy installations, maintenance and repairs as time goes on, which is why it’s essential to upskill sooner rather than later.
Once you’ve gained your qualifications and experience, you may find yourself drawn toward one particular sector of the heating industry.
There is usually less competition as a specialist, which could have a higher earning potential.
Areas you could specialise in:
As heating and renewables manager, you’ll oversee a team of engineers and head up projects – ensuring all those involved are suitably trained and prepared.
Your day-to-day will include delegating tasks, dealing with any issues that may arise, and potentially being on the tools yourself.
As a self-employed heating engineer, you’ll have complete control over what jobs you do, your pay rate and how and when you work.
Being self-employed comes with a vast range of benefits and is incredibly popular, with 920,000 of the UK’s 4.85 million self-employed workers being in the construction industry. (Source: Go Simple Tax)
To begin a career in the renewable energy industry through Options Skills, you will first need to gain your ACS qualifications. You can do this through our Domestic Gas training course.
Delivered in a three-stage format, you’ll learn essential plumbing and gas skills in one of our training centres and work on-site with a mentor to build your gas portfolio and earn your ACS qualifications.
To become a heating & renewables engineer, you’ll then complete our optional stage four, during which you’ll earn essential renewable energy qualifications.
How long it takes to complete renewable energy courses depends on your existing qualifications, experience level, and requirements.
Our renewable energy courses vary in duration between one and five days.
If you require the complete training package, the duration of training is two weeks.
During training, you’ll learn the essentials skills and knowledge you’ll need to underpin all the renewable energy work you go on to carry out.
Heating engineers are responsible for designing and planning, installing and maintaining heating systems in homes and commercial properties throughout the UK. Without them, winters would be a lot colder and more uncomfortable.
And as the industry evolves, their role will become even more critical.
To hit net-zero by 2050, every property currently heated by gas will need updating, and it will be heating engineers responsible for doing this.
However, the future of heating isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation. Instead, engineers must evaluate each property and its heating requirements individually to ensure they install the optimum heating option.
As a result, gas and heating engineers must be skilled and knowledgeable in a range of sustainable heating alternatives to ensure we as a nation can continue to stay powered and warm while reducing our carbon emissions.
Being able to train and upskill on a part-time basis is ideal for existing engineers. It allows them to fit training around their current work and personal commitments.
Currently, each renewable energy training course is between one and five days. Because of this, we cannot offer part-time training options on an individual course.
However, we can offer flexible training options if you want to complete our complete renewables training package.
Our course advisors are on-hand to help you find a schedule that suits you to allow you to upskill in the renewables industry. So get in touch today to find out more on 0800 802 1306.
the future of the
But it’s not just new homes where we will see this.
As renewable heating alternatives enter the market, more and more homeowners choose to add to or replace their current heating systems. Some prefer the hybrid option of gas boilers working alongside solar panels to heat and power their homes. Others opt to install ground or air source heat pumps on their properties.
And as we head toward a greener future, this will only become more common.
What we do know is that it won’t be one alternative that replaces gas boilers. Instead, we will see a variety of options across the UK. As a result, heating engineers need to train in numerous heating systems should they wish to keep up with demand.
It’s an exciting time for the heating industry. Engineers are presented with new opportunities and the chance to expand their skills. This leads them to improve their abilities, offer more services and increase their earning potential.
At the same time, homeowners have never had more choice when powering and heating their homes, allowing them to find better-suited options for their properties and budgets.
Options Skills welcomes students from all backgrounds to enrol on our courses.
However, each course has its own prerequisites, so please look at the individual course pages for more information.
