RENEWABLE ENERGY COURSES FOR NEW ENTRANTS & EXISTING HEATING ENGINEERS

We deliver a range of renewable energy training courses designed to assist engineers in upskilling and future-proofing their careers.

The heating industry is changing in the UK as we move towards reducing our carbon emissions and reaching net-zero by 2050. A significant part of this will be switching to more sustainable heating options. To meet the targets set by the government, gas engineers are being called upon to upskill in the renewable energy sector.

We’re proud to be at the forefront of renewable energy training, delivering various courses to ensure engineers are well-equipped for the developments in the industry and secure in their careers.

Career Opportunities for Heating Engineers

With over 23 million gas boilers still in use across the UK (Source: The Conversation), the demand for gas engineers is still very much there, meaning as a heating & renewables engineer, you may still find a large portion of your work revolves around natural gas heating – at least for the time being.

You’ll install, maintain and repair a range of domestic heating appliances such as boilers, fires and ovens. You may also undertake plumbing work such as bathroom and kitchen installation.

As the industry develops and more people adopt eco-friendly, sustainable heating systems, you’ll find yourself undertaking more renewable energy installations, maintenance and repairs as time goes on, which is why it’s essential to upskill sooner rather than later.

Once you’ve gained your qualifications and experience, you may find yourself drawn toward one particular sector of the heating industry.

There is usually less competition as a specialist, which could have a higher earning potential.

Areas you could specialise in:

  • Ground Source Heat Pumps
  • Air Source Heat Pumps
  • Solar Heating
  • Hydrogen Energy

As heating and renewables manager, you’ll oversee a team of engineers and head up projects – ensuring all those involved are suitably trained and prepared.

Your day-to-day will include delegating tasks, dealing with any issues that may arise, and potentially being on the tools yourself.

As a self-employed heating engineer, you’ll have complete control over what jobs you do, your pay rate and how and when you work.

Being self-employed comes with a vast range of benefits and is incredibly popular, with 920,000 of the UK’s 4.85 million self-employed workers being in the construction industry. (Source: Go Simple Tax)

How to begin a career in the renewables industry

To begin a career in the renewable energy industry through Options Skills, you will first need to gain your ACS qualifications. You can do this through our Domestic Gas training course

Delivered in a three-stage format, you’ll learn essential plumbing and gas skills in one of our training centres and work on-site with a mentor to build your gas portfolio and earn your ACS qualifications.

To become a heating & renewables engineer, you’ll then complete our optional stage four, during which you’ll earn essential renewable energy qualifications.

  • Installation & Maintenance of Ground & Air Source Heat Pumps (IMHPS21, IMASHPS)
  • Low-Temperature Heating Design (LTHHWS)
  • Energy Efficiency (Part L)
  • Water Regulations (WRAS)
  • Unvented (G3)
  • Central Heating Design (HSD1)

How long do renewable energy courses take to complete?

How long it takes to complete renewable energy courses depends on your existing qualifications, experience level, and requirements.

Our renewable energy courses vary in duration between one and five days.

If you require the complete training package, the duration of training is two weeks.

During training, you’ll learn the essentials skills and knowledge you’ll need to underpin all the renewable energy work you go on to carry out.

Why are renewable heating engineers important?

Heating engineers are responsible for designing and planning, installing and maintaining heating systems in homes and commercial properties throughout the UK. Without them, winters would be a lot colder and more uncomfortable.

And as the industry evolves, their role will become even more critical.

To hit net-zero by 2050, every property currently heated by gas will need updating, and it will be heating engineers responsible for doing this.

However, the future of heating isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation. Instead, engineers must evaluate each property and its heating requirements individually to ensure they install the optimum heating option.

As a result, gas and heating engineers must be skilled and knowledgeable in a range of sustainable heating alternatives to ensure we as a nation can continue to stay powered and warm while reducing our carbon emissions.

Full-time & part-time renewable energy courses

Being able to train and upskill on a part-time basis is ideal for existing engineers. It allows them to fit training around their current work and personal commitments.

Currently, each renewable energy training course is between one and five days. Because of this, we cannot offer part-time training options on an individual course.

However, we can offer flexible training options if you want to complete our complete renewables training package.

Our course advisors are on-hand to help you find a schedule that suits you to allow you to upskill in the renewables industry. So get in touch today to find out more on 0800 802 1306.

the future of the

heating Industry

With no new homes built with gas boilers after 2025, low-carbon heating systems will become more popular over the next few years, including electric boilers, heat pumps and solar panels.

But it’s not just new homes where we will see this.

As renewable heating alternatives enter the market, more and more homeowners choose to add to or replace their current heating systems. Some prefer the hybrid option of gas boilers working alongside solar panels to heat and power their homes. Others opt to install ground or air source heat pumps on their properties.

And as we head toward a greener future, this will only become more common.

What we do know is that it won’t be one alternative that replaces gas boilers. Instead, we will see a variety of options across the UK. As a result, heating engineers need to train in numerous heating systems should they wish to keep up with demand.

It’s an exciting time for the heating industry. Engineers are presented with new opportunities and the chance to expand their skills. This leads them to improve their abilities, offer more services and increase their earning potential.

At the same time, homeowners have never had more choice when powering and heating their homes, allowing them to find better-suited options for their properties and budgets.

Option Skills - BirminghamI’m not usually a person who will write feedback on Google, but I am someone who will give credit where credit is due.I found myself in a position where I had been made redundant, and id had a conversation with someone who’d decided to go on a gas course and do this through Option Skills. After speaking with the individual, I decided that id give this a go myself to give myself a trade.I can honestly say that it is better than anything that id ever expected. Iv always been someone who had worked in finance, so doing this was new to me and I was a bit apprehensive with how it would go.I have nothing but praise to the employees at Option Skills, and I feel that they are a credit to the company.Andrew, Leanne and Shaun have been the people taking the training sessions, and what incredible people they are. They are extremely knowledgeable and helpful in every way possible with an extra desire to wanting to see you achieve.I have done the course for 8 weeks, and the knowledge I have picked up already is immense. If you are someone looking to get into the gas trade, I would highly recommend Option Skills as you will not be disappointed.Carl Evans

Although this course is intense and you will find yourself picking up a lot of information in a short space of time, Options Skills are the best way to get into the trades if you are a fast learner and are willing to work hard. The trainers are excellent (John, Steve, Thomas) and they will help you wherever they can, however be prepared to put in the work yourself in the evenings and weekends to revise and pass exams. Josh and James from the recruitment team were a joy to work with, they work tirelessly to find us all placements to start working in the industry while you complete the portfolio part of the course. I just finished the Electrical 6 week course and the lads found me a job in Birmingham city centre. With a number of exams left to do and portfolio to complete after you finish the 6 weeks in-centre, you can expect the total time to reach being qualified to be around 1-2 years.

Really recommend this training centre. Just finished a 6 week electrical installation course. Tutors Colin and John were great, they were knowledgeable professional and very supportive throughout. Josh and his recruitment team managed to find me a job in the industry starting the Monday after I finished the training. 5 stars all round from me. Thank you to everybody at option skills and keep up the good work!!!

Great service from start to finish. Course is very well run & enjoyable. Prepares you for the world of electrics, with constant support from trainers Colin or John when needed. After the course is finished Josh and his team work around the clock to help you get a foot in the door at an electrical company. Constant support & updates, giving you confidence in what can be a hard process. Making it very smooth and simple
